My grandfather trained as a telegraph operator. He started work in southern Ireland for the Commercial Cable Company in 1911(?), and was based in Waterville. This was the most westerly point in Europe, and consequently, was where the trans-Atlantic telegraph cable from Newfoundland came ashore. At the outbreak of ww1 in 1914, he volunteered to fight in the British Army, serving in the Flint and Denbighshire regiment as a telegrapher. He fought in Palestine and the Western Desert campaigns, survived the war, and became a dairy farmer. After the war, he did not go back to telegraphy, but he taught me that ..--.. is the morse code representation for a question mark.
Week One has been slightly daunting, with lots of question marks. There seem to be a large number of elements to the practicum, each of which has a large number of commitments. But like any new assignment, what seems impossible now, in a few short months will seem much less so. I do hope so!
Things will come together. It is a lot of activity but they overlap nicely. You'll see.
